Scandalous, Salacious & Spicy…Summer!

Posted by L.Shannon on August 24th, 2008
Hey there, Summer asked me to post this promo for her. (she actually asked me a while ago, and I’m just now remembering to do it. She really should rely on more reliable people for all her grunt work. LOL Oh well, maybe I can talk others into my promo next. Sort of like a cruel and heartless version of pay it forward. :)

I’m so excited to announce that my latest novella, We Can Move You, came out last Friday! Woot!
When I’d originally written We Can Move You, I was calling it “Two Men and a Truck.” BUT!! I didn’t realize the problems with trademark I would have. Yes, Two Men and a Truck is actually a registered trademark…so that ISN’T the title of my story! LOL I didn’t know it, but fortunately, the editor did
Meanwhile, a few of my writer friends have been giving me a hard time about it. Bree of Moira Rogers fame, for example.
breecita: omg, the blog reminds me…
breecita: I just had to e-mail Two Men & a Truck for an estimate.  LOL
breecita: I laughed THE WHOLE TIME
Summer Alan: LMAO
Summer Alan: estimate: 6′ 2″, 189 pounds…
breecita: hahaha! “$90/hour?  That’s downright affordable!”
breecita: for some HOT STUDLY MOVIN’ ACTION
Summer Alan: shouldn’t take more than 2-3 hours, 2-3 guys…yeah, that’ll work! Let’s schedule a “move”.
breecita: hahaha. paaaahty
breecita: I think I’ll have to go with someone else if we move…I’d laugh at them THE WHOLE TIME
Summer Alan: i had to change the title of course, but i’m telling ya. that could UP BUSINESS
It’s a tough life being a writer…so many things to consider. LOL

Chaos is my friend…

Posted by L.Shannon on August 5th, 2008

Off topic, off course, off task, often. Yep that’s me blundering around in this thing I call life. I love lists and plans and agendas. I really do. They give me this false sense of order when deep down in my heart, I know life is chaos. But I’m from calm dependable stock and I know that chaos can reign and life will still roll onward. Hey, quit laughing. I CAN be calm. I can, really. I mean it. STOP LAUGHING. Okay then… as I was saying.

I have a list of things to do and I look at it often, sometimes I let the very intimidating list terrorize me, other times I let it motivate me. At the moment I feel fairly on top of things. I have one book due in (checks calendar) 4 days and I really think I’ll be turning it on time.

Right now that list is motivational, because when I look at it and see that the next book in line is Dead Men’s Nails: Kindred Spirit and I LOVE that book. Had to put it aside last fall to finish up some promised books and now I’m almost back to it. Can’t wait. :-)

Yeah, so chaos has me in its fiery grip and I kind of like it. The proof is obvious in the past two months. Seriously chaotic. Way way chaotic. May 31st the last Anom’tan book came out with cobblestone then June had tons of editing and the writing and release of Steel City Vampires: Welcome Home Which Moira Reid and I decided to give away. You can find that free download at her site http://readmoore.com.  Then came July and ebook release of my second Chance book, title (laughing) A Second Chance. In know, not very original, but for anyone who liked A Snowball’s Chance and wants more of Josh and Chance, run and get it anyway. Chaos … now that was the print release of Father of the Wolf. My family seems to think I’m an author *now* even if they don’t have the books in hand yet, lol. They had lots of partying and much merriment. Then just a short week later, while I was still recuperating, comes the release of my Vampire Oracle: LOVE.

Did I mention that I LOVE LOVE?  Wow, had a blast writing that story. I laughingly accepted the challenge to do a m/m vampire romance and am thrilled at how it came out. Though I will post an ANGST warning for this story. Not much out there more complicated than a badass (gay) Catholic Vampire. Just made me love Dillon all the more.

And is that cover gorgeous or what? I saw it and thought, yep. That is my broken human comforting my damaged vamp. One look and I just knew these two. I knew them both and had to share them with everyone else who I could bribe or bully into taking the time.

I’m not going to clog up the blog with I huge excerpt like I had planned. With all my other blabbing I figure you might just like to hit that excerpt up on a link instead.

The Worlds I Live In by L. Shannon

Posted by L.Shannon on July 21st, 2008

My real life is not boring, at least not to me. I have a busy, often crazy family full of plenty of drama, but in the grand scheme of things, the rest of the world would see my real life as pretty boring, uninspiring and humdrum.

Maybe that is why I vacation in another place. It may have been created just to give me something to do at night, but the world of my writing has become a real place, a home away from home. The places are real to me, and so are the people. Not to mention the trials and tribulations my poor characters are forced to overcome.

I’ve had readers and writers ask how I come up with so many strange plots and it’s funny. I actually don’t know. Every now and then I will get stuck on some point and then I play what I call the “what if” game. The way that works is I think about the current characters and the current problems and then I start a list of what if scenarios. Some of them are boring or expected options, but others can be way out there.

Does anyone remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? I loved those. I’ve often thought creating a paranormal romance story with options for the reader to choose would be fun. I haven’t done one yet but I think I might just put it on my to-do list.

Back to where I get my ideas… While at Romantic Times this year I heard JR Ward talk about the story just being there and she’s just in charge of putting it down. I understand that feeling. I think maybe for my first book I was still sort of in control, but after that… well let’s just say that the story is bigger and stronger than me. I can close my eyes and see these places. I walk around my house talking to these people. I know when I’m writing their story and when I’ve gotten off track.

Because when I get off track, the story stops. Writing becomes harder than catching a greased pig. I do battle with the story, I struggle for every word and I lose the quality. Usually I see it happening and can stop and look at the work and figure out where I stepped off the path. Once I find the problem, I can fix it and move on, no longer having to fight it.

Perhaps this answers why I sometimes dislike writing the love scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading them, and living them. (grin)  But sometimes the people become so real to me that I feel like I’m invading their privacy. Those times it can be a struggle to get through the scenes. Once I manage though, I always go back and find that the people, knowing them so well make the scenes so much more personal. Not personal as in “hey I think I will try that tonight with hubby” but personal as in I can see why those two people are in love. I can see why they have to be together or the world will stop turning.

“But how did you come up with your world? It is so diverse!”

What world isn’t?  My stories all started out with my Eagle Clan. (Insert plug here-> Eagle Clan 1: Father of the Wolf is coming in print this Friday –July 25th!) The Eagle Clan was so powerful and emotional that I just had to see around the edges to see what was coming for them. Once I got a glimpse I saw that there were demons and gods and vampires and all these different people who all had stories to tell me. (HINT: they are all connected to the Eagle Clan.) The Eagle Clan is just one family amid a whole culture of werewolves. My werewolves have ties to humans and plenty of other nonhumans.

Think Seven Degrees of Separation.  In Eagle Clan 2: Destiny I introduce a Tascryn demon named Grant. Grant is the hero of Of Blood and Blessings. Grant’s mother is Sadrina from Blood Reign. Sadrina’s man rules over Niflheim (better known as hell) and he commands Bryck from the Anom’tan books. Bryck’s woman is from an as yet unreleased book that I can’t tell you about. LOL! The Anom’tan unit is living in a building that once was used by… wait can’t tell you that either. And the Bryck’s Anom’tan unit will be in the next Lynx Clan book. Oh Sadrina (Grant’s mom) was also the one who changed Rook into a vampire even though it is breaking her own rules. Good thing she did because Rook is just perfect for Angel and Angel is the heroine from Misplaced Fate and she needs herself a tough man. Oh and remember Kita from Destiny? If you liked her check out my short story, The Promise.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. Once I met these people I had access to so many stories that I could write for a lifetime and never get them all down. In fact, I think I will write for a lifetime… maybe more.

Don’t forget Father of the Wolf!

Run out (or stay in) and buy a copy. Even if you have the e-book, because the new edit has offered a refreshing new look at my favorite clan. Not only that, but book two is already available and book three is nearly done. And if that isn’t enough incentive, think about how many other books I have that are all connected. Jump right in and learn all the secrets to my universe.

Confessions of a Series Addict

Posted by L.Shannon on May 27th, 2008

Hello, my name is L. Shannon. I’m a series addict.

All my life I’ve read, preferred and obsessed over books that are part of a series. My first major foray into the addicting realm was with the Black Stallion by Walter Farley. After just one book I had to have them all. I begged, pleaded and nagged my parents to buy them all. Not much has changed in the twenty plus years since. I’m still obsessed by series books.

When I started writing it wasn’t much of a surprise that I wrote books in a series. It started with The Eagle Clan: Father of the Wolf but quickly branched out in several directions. Nearly all my books are part of series and all are set in the same universe.

I started writing this post to explain why I do what I do and realize now that it’s pretty obvious. Just like reading a story and falling for the other guy, I wanted to know what happened to the characters who didn’t get their own HEA in book one. Sometimes what starts off as a single book grows into a series because I can’t let go without helping the other characters fall in love.  Sometimes, I see a book as part of a series right from the first idea.

My Anom’tan series fell under the second option. I knew this was a four book series before I started book one. In fact the books might be better classified as single serial story rather than a series of four books. Book one, Walking with Synn introduces the problem and the characters (day walking Tascryn demons), but it isn’t until book 4: Walking Death’s Edge that the problem (saving their missing comrade) is finally resolved.

I have always loved books with this kind of pattern, but I will say that the wait time between books drives me every bit as crazy as the next reader. So those readers who have not yet bought an Anom’tan book… Friday is the day to start. Buy the whole series and enjoy a fast paced, erotic action story from start to finish.

Yes, I am a series addict. I hope I never recover. LOL
